Overview

PHP contains a path translation vulnerability that may allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code.

Description

PHP is a scripting language that is designed for web-based applications and can be imbedded directly into HTML.

PHP versions prior to 5.2.6 contain a path translation vulnerability. For more information about this issue, see the PHP CVS log.

Impact

An attacker may be able to execute arbitrary code in the context of an application that uses the vulnerable function. The scope of the impact depends on how the affected application works. Applications that process filename input from the network, such as public-facing web applications, would be vulnerable to a remote attacker.

Solution

Upgrade
PHP 5.2.6 was released to address this and other issues.
